Santo Domingo and Samaná, without rushing
A week is enough to see two sides of the Dominican Republic if you do not turn every morning into a hotel change. This route pairs Santo Domingo with three nights in one base on the Samaná Peninsula. It also leaves a final night in the capital so you are not relying on a long transfer on flight day.
The route at a glance
- Nights 1 and 2: Santo Domingo.
- Nights 3, 4 and 5: Las Terrenas as your only Samaná base.
- Night 6: Santo Domingo, positioned for your departure.
- Day 7: travel home, with no last-minute excursion.
Day 1 · Arrive in Santo Domingo
Head to your accommodation, eat and rest. If you arrive in daylight and have the energy, take a short walk nearby. Avoid booking a timed attraction or a tight intercity connection on the same day as your flight.
Day 2 · Explore the city at your own pace
Spend the morning in the Colonial Zone. Choose two or three places that genuinely interest you, make time for an unhurried lunch and leave the afternoon open for more walking or a break. Check museum and monument hours and admission before you go; they can change.
Day 3 · Transfer to Samaná
Set off for Las Terrenas with room in your schedule. Compare transport using your exact departure point, luggage and arrival point: a trip advertised as going “to Samaná” may not end near your accommodation. Confirm the final leg before paying. Check in and keep the afternoon free; the transfer is already the main activity today.
Day 4 · A beach day without a checklist
Pick a beach you can reach comfortably from your base and keep the plan simple. Check sea conditions and local advice before swimming; an attractive beach is not necessarily safe for a swim. If the weather changes, swap the beach for a relaxed meal or a walk around town.
Day 5 · One excursion, not three
Choose one experience you really want. Los Haitises National Park is an option; the Dominican Republic's official tourism site describes boat visits from Samaná. Ask the operator about the departure point, total time from Las Terrenas, weather conditions, park access and what the price includes. If a long day does not appeal to you, stay close to your base instead. You do not need to fill every day.
Day 6 · Return with a buffer
Go back to Santo Domingo and spend the night there. Save your confirmations, check your departure time and terminal, and arrange your airport transport. That buffer is especially useful if your flight leaves early the next day.
Day 7 · Departure
Have breakfast if your timing allows and reach the airport as early as your airline advises. Skip any extra stop that could complicate your departure.
What to book and what to keep flexible
- Book first: flights, six nights of accommodation and the two long transfers if you are travelling on busy dates.
- Confirm before paying: accommodation location, pick-up point, cancellation terms and the cost of the final leg.
- Keep flexible: the excursion and beach day, depending on weather and how you feel.
- Budget separately: meals, local transport, admission, tips and a contingency amount. There is no single correct figure; it depends on how you travel.
The point is not to follow a minute-by-minute schedule, but to protect the time that often disappears into transfers. If you prefer more nature and less city time, you could shift one Santo Domingo night to Samaná, as long as you keep a buffer before your flight.
